When procuring hotel linens, the term Thread Count (TC) is often used as a primary indicator of quality. The common misconception is that a higher number automatically signifies a better fabric. Thread count is the total number of vertical (warp) and horizontal (weft) threads in one square inch of fabric. For example, a fabric with 100 vertical and 100 horizontal threads is labeled 200 TC. However, some manufacturers artificially inflate this number by using “multi-ply” yarns. This doesn’t result in a better fabric; it often leads to a heavier, less breathable product that traps heat.
For a hotel operation, the choice of thread count is a balance between Comfort and Durability:
200 TC: The “Gold Standard” for high-end 4 and 5-star hotels. It is exceptionally durable, highly breathable, and holds up best under the rigors of industrial laundering.
